Log Burner and Chimney Sweep Guide

A wood burner is one of the most satisfying heating upgrades you can add to your house. But to keep it running safely and efficiently year after year, it needs to be looked after properly. That means an annual wood burner service and chimney sweep, carried out by a qualified professional.

This guide will explain exactly what a wood burner service and chimney sweep involves, how often it should be done, what the warning signs are that you're overdue and how we can help if you need a log burner servicing.

What is a Wood Burner Service and a Chimney Sweep?

A wood burner service and chimney sweep combine two essential maintenance tasks into one visit. The stove itself is then inspected, cleaned and tested. The chimney flue is swept to remove soot, creosote and any other blockages that have built up over the burning season.

Booking in both together makes sense as it keeps costs down, minimises disruption in your home and ensures everything is assessed as a complete system instead of looking at parts in isolation.

The Wood Burner Service: What's Included?

During a professional wood burner servicing, a qualified (preferably HETAS) engineer will typically carry out the following:

  • Inspect the firebox, grate and ash pan for any damage
  • Check and replace door rope seals if needed
  • check baddle plate
  • Inspect the air wash system and air vents
  • Check all external welds and joints
  • clean the stove thoroughly
  • carry out a visual inspection of flue
  • provide written report

The Chimney Sweep: What's Included?

The chimney sweeping part is more focused on the flue and chimney:

  • sweep the flue from top to bottom
  • remove all soot and debris
  • Inspect the flue liner thoroughly
  • Check the chimney pot, cowl and top for any blocks
  • Assess the draw and ventilation
  • Issue an official chimney sweep certificate

How Often Should You Be Booking a Wood Burner Service and Sweep?

It's recommended to have your log burner serviced at least once a year. The advice goes up to twice a year if you use it frequently.

Can I Service My Log Burner Myself?

There are definitely some basic maintenance tasks you can do yourself between annual services, such as:

  • emptying the ash pan as and when needed
  • cleaning the glass
  • checking door rope seal

But a full stove service and chimney sweep should always be carried out by someone who's qualified.

DIY chimney sweeping is not recommended. Without proper equipment, you risk spreading soot, failing to remove compacted deposits and also missing structural damage to the flue, which only an experienced eye can spot!

More importantly, only a professional sweep can issue the Chimney Sweep Certificate that you need to prove the work has been carried out, which your insurer can request.

Chimney Sweep Methods

Not all chimney sweeping methods are the same, so here's a quick overview of the main approaches.

Traditional Rod and Brush Sweeping

The most widely used method. Flexible rods are connected and pushed up the flue with a rotary bush attached. The brush dislodges soot and creosote, which falls into a sealed collection bag or vacuum system at the base. Clean, effective, and suitable for the most standard flues.

Power Sweeping

Power sweeping uses motorised rotary systems to provide a more aggressive clean. Often recommended for flues that haven't been swept in several years.

Flue Inspection With CCTV

Following a sweep, a CCTV camera can be inserted into the flue to inspect the liner visually. This is particularly useful for older houses, unlined chimneys or where damage is suspected but not visible from either end. It provides a definitive picture of the flues condition.
